Facilities

Waiting RoomMaes Glas Veterinary Group is an RCVS accredited practice and training centre for student veterinary nurses. Working alongside the 15 veterinary surgeons, we have 8 qualified veterinary nurses and an excellent and motivated support staff.

Maes Glas Veterinary Group is able to offer the latest technical equipment which compliments the professional expertise that you would expect of a modern veterinary practice. Most of our resources are offered at each branch; however there may be occasions where we might ask you to take your pet to one of our other surgeries. We believe that by working together as a group, we are able to provide your pet with a more complete first class service.

Within our purpose built practices we are able to offer car parking facilities and pleasant waiting areas with associated consulting rooms.

We are computerised throughout so that we are able to access up to date clinical records for your pet regardless of the branch that you visit.

Dentistry

photo3Pets suffer with dental problems too; therefore we undertake ultrasonic descaling, polishing and extractions as required using specialized dental equipment. Stephanie, one of our qualified veterinary nurses has recently completed a post graduate dental certificate and is happy to chat about any dental issues that your pet might be experiencing.

Laboratory Facilities

photo1We have the latest biochemical and haematological analysers which enable us to run blood tests on your pet and obtain a result within an hour of sampling, thereby assisting with a rapid diagnosis. This means that we are also able to undertake preoperative blood sampling prior to an anaesthetic without your pet having to make two separate visits.

We undertake microscopy work which includes skin scrapes for mite identification or urine sample analyses. We have access to specialized external laboratories which meet any needs that we are unable to provide.

Diagnostic Equipment

Digital ProcessorRadiography - Our radiographic facitities enable us to x-ray your pet and process the films in our automatic processors within 3 minutes on the premises. Our Brackla hospital has recently upgraded to a digital processor with complementary radiographic equipment. This will allow your pet's radiographs to be stored with his/her clinical history thus allowing easy viewing by all veterinary surgeons (in any of our branches) associated with your pet's condition.

ScanningUltrasonography - Ultrasonography can be utilized in the examination of the heart and for identifying size and structural changes in other internal organs. It also allows us to offer a safe and reliable technique for pregnancy diagnosis. We have both large and small animal ultrasound facilities. Several of our clinicians have undertaken post graduate courses in order to update their skills in this field.

endoscopyEndoscopy - We have both a large and small endoscope, which allows visual examination of the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract of the body. Whilst in horses, endoscopy can be performed on a conscious or sedated animal, a general anaesthetic is required for cats and dogs.

ecgElectrocardiogram (ecg) - This enables us to measure the electrical activity of your pet's heart to ensure that it is working effectively and correctly. We will examine the trace recordings produced on site and if necessary can refer the trace to an external cardiologist.

Doppler Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, which is often seen in cats, can give rise to serious complications. Monitoring of blood pressures is readily undertaken at the practice following a consultation with one of our veterinary surgeons.

Anaesthesia

AnaesthesiaWe appreciate that you have concerns when your pet has to undergo an anaesthetic. A fully trained member of staff will therefore, admit your pet so that they can discuss your particular queries, thereby hopefully alleviating your worries. As with any anaesthetic there is always a risk but we use modern anaesthetics that minimize these risks and assist with a more pleasant recovery.

Every animal undergoing an anaesthetic is thoroughly examined on admission and we are also able to offer preoperative blood sampling for all cats and dogs. These being particularly recommended if your pet is older than 8 years or has an existing medical condition. Every anaesthetic is carefully monitored, having an array of modern anaesthetic monitoring equipment to hand.

Laser Surgery

Laser SurgeryWe are now able to offer laser surgery as an alternative to more conventional methods. Laser surgery has long since been offered and proven in the human field and as a progressive practice, we feel that this can also be of benefit to your pet whilst undergoing surgery with us. Laser surgery can be beneficial because it causes less bleeding during the surgical procedure and less pain post-operatively which in turn will lead to a quicker recovery. To determine if laser surgery is the best option for your pet, please contact the practice.

Nurse clinics

Our qualified nurses are happy to give advice on all aspects of preventative health care for your pet either at the surgery or on the phone. Obesity is becoming as much a problem in pets as well as in humans and we are happy to enrol your pet on a weight loss scheme.

We now hold puppy playgroups because we are great believers in socialising puppies from a young age so that they will become well adjusted adults. These groups are run by two of our nurses who have a wealth of behavioural experience. Please contact the surgery for further information.

24 Hour Emergency Cover

Maes Glas Veterinary Group provides 24 hour emergency cover to registered clients for 365 days of the year. We firmly believe it is in the best interests of our patients that they are treated by their regular practice, and for this reason we do not request that our clients attend another practice for their out of hours care. Clients should be aware that our out of hours facilities are based at the Brackla Hospital so it is likely you will be requested to bring your pet to Brackla for out of hours treatment.

However, once there they will have 24 hour nursing care and will be treated to completion.

Home Visits for Pets

We are happy to visit your home between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Prior arrangements must be made with your local branch surgery. You should be aware that we are unable to transport dogs in our vehicle back to the practice due to health and safety regulations, therefore cases requiring hospitalisation will need to be transported to the clinic by the owner.

PDSA Petaid

By working in conjunction with the PDSA we are able to help with fees for those clients who meet the PDSA registration requirements. Anyone who wishes to join the scheme must register a minimum of 4 weeks prior to any treatment - please ask at reception for a form. The PDSA scheme does not cover vaccinations, regular worm and flea treatments or preventative health care. Some conditions and investigations are not treated under the scheme and you will need to check these exceptions with the practice.

We require pets to be regularly vaccinated before entry to the scheme.

Terms of Business

We are happy to accept payment by cash, cheque, credit or debit card. Estimates can be given prior to procedures being undertaken but please be aware that often the extent of the treatment will not be known when first admitting your pet, therefore we will try to update you on any rising fees. All fees should be paid for at the time of the treatment and on collection of your pet from the practice.

In order to take the worry out of veterinary fees, we would recommend insurance for your pet. Forms are available at reception.
